About Victoria
Victoria has a rich history. It’s Western Canada’s oldest city. Founded in 1843 as a Hudson Bay Company trading post, it was named in honour of Queen Victoria. The Fraser Valley gold rush in 1858 brought rapid growth to Victoria as it was the main port of entry to the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. It was chosen as the provincial capital when British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation in 1871.
At the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria is sometimes confused with Vancouver which is just across the Strait of Georgia via one of the most picturesque ferry trips in the world. Victoria also enjoys friendly relations with our American neighbours and is within easy reach of the state of Washington by ferry or air travel.
Over the years, Victoria has evolved into a city centred on government, retirement and tourism. Of course, some of the world’s leading technology companies also call us home – attracted by the mild climate and easy pace of life in the city. Victoria is blessed with a rich culture including drama, arts and its own symphony orchestra.
The City is also Canada's western naval base and home to a major fishing fleet. Ship building and repair, as well as forest products and machine manufacturing industries, continue as significant sources of employment.
If education is in your future, you could consider one of several local institutions including the University of Victoria, Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific (one of only six in the world operated by United World Colleges), and Royal Roads University – a top-notch business college.
Victoria’s island situation boasts beautiful vistas, and some of the most sought after sailing waters in the world. The Inner Harbour is world-renowned and is within steps of the famous Empress Hotel and the Parliament Buildings. Island parks with abundant wildlife and visitor-friendly camping facilities help even novice campers to enjoy the natural surroundings.
With a population of approximately 330,000 Victoria is small enough to be intimate, yet big enough to provide even the most sophisticated visitors with the entertainment they seek.
